Many people think that “steam cleaning” is the best way to clean any carpet. You see those big vans with “Steam Clean” written on the side all over Sacramento. Think about a silk tie or a fancy silk dress. You would never put those in a washing machine with hot water, right? You would never hit them with a hot iron without being very careful. Silk is a natural fiber made by silkworms. It is made of protein, just like the hair on your head.
Standard steam cleaners use water that is almost boiling. When that high heat hits a silk rug, it causes silk rug heat damage. The heat makes the protein fibers “relax” or even melt a little bit. Once this happens, the fibers lose their strength. The rug might start to look wavy on the floor. It might shrink in some spots but not others. This makes the rug lumpy. Sadly, once the fibers are damaged by heat, they cannot be fixed. That is why we never use hot steam on your luxury rugs.
Silk is famous for its shine. It has a shimmer that looks like moonlight on water. This happens because silk fibers are very smooth and flat. They reflect light perfectly. When a company uses “wet cleaning” (like steam cleaning), they soak the rug with a lot of water.
Silk does not like to be soaking wet. When silk stays wet for too long, it can lead to silk rug fiber browning. This means the rug starts to look yellow or muddy instead of bright and white. Also, the water makes the tiny fibers stand up in different directions. Instead of laying flat and shiny, they look “fuzzy.” When the fibers are fuzzy, they don’t reflect light anymore. Since we cannot use hot steam or lots of water, we use a special professional method. We call it professional low-moisture rug cleaning. It is a very gentle way to get the dirt out without hurting the silk.
First, we use air to blow all the dust and grit out of the rug. Next, we use a special machine that makes a very fine mist or a “dry” foam. We gently move this foam into the rug with soft brushes. The foam acts like a magnet. It grabs onto the dirt and pulls it away from the silk fibers. Finally, we use a very soft vacuum to suck up the foam and the dirt. The rug never gets “soaked” or heavy with water. This keeps the fibers safe, keeps the colors bright, and keeps the rug from shrinking.
After a rug is cleaned, it needs to dry. Some companies use big heaters to dry rugs fast. But just like hot steam, hot air is bad for silk. Heat can make the silk feel “crunchy” or stiff. It can also make the fibers break when you walk on them.

This “air-drying” method pulls the water out of the rug without using any heat. We also use a machine that takes the moisture out of the air. This makes sure the rug dries in just a few hours. When a silk rug dries quickly and naturally, it stays soft and bouncy. It keeps that beautiful glow that you love.
